Roll Forming

What is Roll Forming?

Roll forming is a production process that uses a continuous series of rollers to produce building structural components required for various engineering projects from sheet metal.

Forming process
While traditional punch presses form stamped parts in one go, roll forming gradually deforms the metal to the desired formed shape. Each set of rollers completes a small amount of forming process, gradually bending the shape, and this process can achieve more complex shapes than traditional stamping.

During the forming process, raw materials such as galvanized steel strips or steel coils pass through the forming line to produce the designed contour shape of the raw materials. The characteristic of this forming process is continuous forming, and each station completes a certain shape. The roll forming machine is designed at the beginning to calculate the number of rollers required and the shape that each set of rollers needs to form, so that the efficiency of each set of rollers is the best. The more rollers and rollers there are, the more perfect the formed profile is. The roll forming line is mainly used to bend metal materials and make metal materials into plates, tubes or other metal structure shapes.

Advantages of roll forming process

Roll forming has obvious advantages. The production line of roll forming is an assembly line that can produce continuously without interruption, with high production efficiency, capable of mass production of metal profiles, and can save costs. Moreover, stamping and welding processes can be combined with roll forming and completed on a production line, so that the roll forming products can achieve the same effect and function as the extruded profiles.

Unlike other forming processes, the roll forming process can produce lightweight steel structural parts. When designing the machine, the machine can be manufactured according to the thickness of the structural parts. Importantly, roll forming is the forming of raw materials that have been painted or painted to avoid scratching the product by secondary painting. Although hot forming can also produce similar structural parts, cold forming is a process produced at room temperature, so it has no risk of deformation and is more energy-efficient.

It is precisely based on so many advantages that roll forming is used in many modern industries, including construction, automobiles, agriculture, logistics, solar energy, shelves, highway guardrails, and fences.
